DAY 01: ARRIVAL SANDAKAN – SEPILOK – SUNBEAR – RAINFOREST – RESORT
Upon arrival at Sandakan Airport, you will be transferred to the Sepilok Orangutan Rehabilitation Centre. Upon arrival, proceed to the Nature Education Centre for a short video screening. Then, make your way through the forest to the viewing platform to witness the feeding session and observe the habitat of the “wild man of the forest” at close range. Learn about and meet the protected inhabitants of these sanctuaries while appreciating the conservation efforts undertaken to save them.
After lunch, continue to the Bornean Sunbear Conservation Centre, where you can get close to the world’s smallest bear in its natural forest environment. Informative boards with facts about the sunbears are displayed along the walkways, and binoculars are available at the viewing platform to observe the bears more closely.
Next, visit the Rainforest Discovery Centre, developed by the Sabah Forestry Department to provide insight into the wonders of the rainforest. The 347-metre canopy walkway offers a spectacular view of the lush Sepilok rainforest from 25 metres above the ground. Walk among towering rainforest trees and observe life high in the canopy, including epiphytes, birds, and squirrels. If you are lucky, you may even spot a wild orangutan. Visit the Plant Discovery Garden before transferring back to your selected hotel for leisure and overnight.
DAY 02: SEPILOK – KINABATANGAN RIVER
(Breakfast / Lunch / Dinner)
After breakfast, check out and transfer to the Kinabatangan River to begin your 2D1N Kinabatangan Wildlife Tour. A river cruise at dawn or dusk offers the best opportunity to see Borneo’s diverse wildlife. The journey takes approximately 2–3 hours, passing through rustic countryside.
Upon arrival at the resort, you will be welcomed by the resort crew, served refreshments, and given a briefing covering the resort routes and safety guidelines. Check in to your room.
At 4:00 PM, embark on an exciting river cruise to spot wildlife such as Proboscis Monkeys, Orangutans, Silver Leaf Monkeys, Macaques, crocodiles, birds, and more. Cruise along the mighty Kinabatangan River and be mesmerized by the abundance of wildlife along the riverbanks. During certain seasons, you may even sight the world’s smallest elephant—the Borneo Pygmy Elephant—foraging along the riverbank. All eight species of hornbills found in Borneo also make this river their home. Dinner will be served after sunset. Overnight at your accommodation.
DAY 03: KINABATANGAN RIVER – SEMPORNA
(Breakfast)
Wake up to the calls of gibbons and forest birds. Enjoy a morning river cruise along the Kinabatangan River to search for birds and wildlife. After the cruise, return to the lodge, freshen up, and enjoy breakfast.
Thereafter, proceed with an overland transfer to Semporna Town, approximately a 4-hour journey depending on traffic, passing through Lahad Datu with a pit stop along the way. Upon arrival, drop off at your selected hotel in Semporna for check-in. Free at leisure and overnight.
DAY 04: SNORKELING MABUL & KAPALAI – SEMPORNA
(Breakfast / Lunch)
Slip into the sea and discover a variety of unique marine life such as orangutan crabs, spider crabs, and sea turtles. Mabul and Kapalai are two of Sabah’s most famous islands, located off Semporna, Tawau. Mabul Island, originally a fishing village since the 1970s, has become a popular destination for divers due to its close proximity to Sipadan Island.
Kapalai, on the other hand, is a world-class diving destination featuring beautiful coral reefs carpeting the seabed and colourful fish decorating the clear waters—equally enjoyable through snorkeling. During your snorkeling adventure, you may also encounter the nomadic sea gypsies, known as the Bajau Laut. After the excursion, transfer back to Semporna. Free at leisure and overnight.
