From Heritage Towns to Royal Brunei — A Borneo Cultural Discovery

Journey across Sarawak’s cultural heartlands, from Sibu’s rich Fuzhou heritage and Melanau traditions in Mukah to the ancient wonders of Niah Caves and scenic coastlines. Explore Miri’s oil legacy, experience Brunei’s royal landmarks, and uncover living cultures, historic sites, and breathtaking landscapes along the way. A perfect blend of heritage, nature, and cross-border discovery in one unforgettable Borneo adventure.

DAY 01: Arrival in Sibu – Culture & Heritage

Upon arrival at Sibu Airport, you will be greeted and transferred to the city centre to begin your tour. Sibu is a melting pot of history and rich Fuzhou culture.

Your first stop is the Sibu Heritage Centre, where the history of Sibu, its ethnic cultures, lifestyles, and traditions are presented through engaging exhibits. Continue to the Sibu Central Market, the largest indoor market in Malaysia, with more than 1,200 hawker stalls. Here, discover unique local specialties such as Kompia (Fuzhou bagel), Long Life Noodles, smoked prawns, and a variety of local Chinese snacks and pastries.

Next, visit a Memorial Garden / Heritage Centre. Sibu is home to more than 15 such centres, reflecting its strong community roots. Continue to the World Fuzhou Gallery, built to commemorate the 100-year anniversary of Chinese migration from Fuzhou, China, showcasing the community’s growth and achievements over the past century.

DAY 02: Sibu – Mukah – Bintulu (Melanau Culture)

After breakfast and check-out, depart overland towards Mukah, passing through Selangau with scenic views of the Batang Mukah River.

Upon arrival in Mukah, stroll through the local fish market to discover fresh seafood and local delicacies such as Umai (raw fish salad), Si’et (sago worms), and various sago-based products.

Cross the Batang Mukah by local river taxi, offering an authentic experience through mangrove forests surrounding Tanjong Pedada, with possible sightings of long-tailed macaques.

Continue along the Tellian River to visit Lamin Dana, a traditional Melanau Tall House that serves as a living museum showcasing Melanau culture, traditions, and heritage. Enjoy a village walk to learn about the Melanau Jerunei or Kelidieng (ancient burial posts).

Lunch will be served at the homestay. Before departure, pick up popular local treats such as Tebaloi (sago cookies) or dry prawn crackers as souvenirs.

After lunch, continue your overland journey to Bintulu. Check in to your selected hotel for leisure and overnight.


DAY 03: Bintulu – Niah Caves – Tusan Beach – Miri

(Breakfast / Lunch)
After breakfast, travel approximately 90 minutes to Niah National Park. Upon arrival, register at the park headquarters and receive a brief orientation at the information centre.

Take a short boat ride across the river to visit the Niah Museum, followed by a three-kilometre plankwalk to the main cave entrance (approximately 45 minutes’ walk).

The Niah Cave system is renowned for its edible bird’s nests, harvested high from the cave ceiling. Visit the Painted Cave, where you will see prehistoric wall drawings and the preserved remains of a 40,000-year-old Stone Age human—one of Southeast Asia’s most significant archaeological discoveries.

Return via the same plankwalk to the park canteen for lunch. After lunch, proceed to Tusan Beach for photo opportunities (weather permitting), before continuing onward to Miri City. Check in to your selected hotel for leisure and overnight.


DAY 04: Miri – Brunei Excursion (Royal Highlights)

(Breakfast / Lunch)
After breakfast, depart for an overland journey to Bandar Seri Begawan, the capital of Brunei. The drive takes approximately 2.5 hours, including immigration clearance at the Sungai Tujuh checkpoint. Please ensure all required travel documents and currency are prepared.

Upon arrival, visit the Royal Regalia Museum, housing royal regalia and exhibits commemorating the Silver and Golden Jubilee celebrations of Sultan Hassanal Bolkiah.

Continue to the iconic Omar Ali Saifuddien Mosque, one of Brunei’s national mosques, featuring a replica of a 16th-century royal barge set in a lagoon.

Lunch will be served at a local restaurant.

After lunch, visit:

  • Jame’ Asr Hassanil Bolkiah Mosque, Brunei’s second national mosque, known for its grand architecture

  • Kampung Ayer (Venice of the East), a photo stop at the world’s largest water village

  • Istana Nurul Iman, the Sultan of Brunei’s official residence (photo stop only)

Around 4:00 PM, depart for the return journey to Miri, passing by Jerudong Park en route. Arrive back in Miri at approximately 6:00 PM and transfer to your hotel for overnight.


DAY 05: Miri City Tour & Departure

(Breakfast)
After breakfast and check-out, begin your Miri City Tour. Drive through the town centre, passing administrative buildings and religious landmarks such as the Chinese Temple and Taoist Temple, observing Miri’s development from a small oil town into a modern city.

Visit the Miri Heritage Centre, showcasing traditional arts and crafts from Northern Sarawak’s ethnic groups, including Iban Pua Kumbu, Kenyah woodcarvings, and Lun Bawang tree bark products.

Continue to Canada Hill Lookout for panoramic city views and visit the Petroleum Science Museum near Oil Well No. 1, the site of Malaysia’s first oil discovery.

Explore the local Tamu Market, where farmers sell jungle produce, fruits, vegetables, and poultry. Conclude the tour with photo stops at Miri City Hall (The Barrel) and Coco Cabana, a popular waterfront area by a man-made lake.

Transfer to Miri International Airport (MYY) for your departure flight.
